Resolution Adopted by the CCAR
Reform Jewish Day Schools
Adopted by the CCAR at the 98th Annual Convention of
the Central Conference of American Rabbis
1987
WHEREAS the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, in adopting a resolution on full-time
educational options for Reform Jewish children at its 1985 Biennial convention in
Los Angeles, acknowledged the importance of ongoing efforts to strengthen public
education, and
WHEREAS that resolution observed the increasing number of Reform Jews seeking out
a broader and deeper Jewish education through Reform Jewish day schools, and
WHEREAS that resolution endorsed the concept of autonomous, self-supporting Reform
Jewish day schools as a valid educational option and authorized the UAHC Department
of Education to develop curricula, materials and teacher training programs to strengthen
such schools, and
WHEREAS this resolution is in concert with the 1979 resolution of the Central Conference
of American Rabbis that encouraged the further development of Reform Jewish day schools,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the CCAR commends the UAHC on its action, while maintaining
its support of public education, and reiterates its support of educational programs
that will increase the knowledge and strengthen the commitment of our people to the ideals and ideas of “liberal” Judaism.
