Resolution Adopted by the CCAR
Jews in Arab and Muslim Lands
Adopted by the CCAR at the 100th Annual Convention of
the Central Conference of American Rabbis
Cincinnati, Ohio June, 1989
WHEREAS the plight of Jews in Syria, Libya, Iran, Lebanon, and Yemen continues to
be an ongoing traumatic situation; and
WHEREAS those Jews do not enjoy the same freedom of religion enjoyed by other Jews
in Israel, in the West, and elsewhere; and
WHEREAS these Jews often fear for their physical safety due to threats, arrests, kidnappings,
torture, and death, and
WHEREAS the Central Conference of American Rabbis has gone on record, since 1968,
in support of our beleaguered brothers and sisters in these lands, therefore
RESOLVED that the CCAR request of U.S. governmental officials to inquire into the
situation of the Jewish residents in these Arab lands and to assist them wherever
possible, and
FURTHER RESOLVED that CCAR members create programs and educational information for
their congregations and organizations that will keep our communities fully aware
of the ongoing need to assist the Jewish communities of these Arab nations.
