Arab Uprising

Resolution Adopted by the CCAR

Arab Uprising

Adopted by the CCAR at the 100th Annual Convention of

the Central Conference of American Rabbis

Cincinnati, Ohio June, 1989

WHEREAS in 1988, in Jerusalem, the Central Conference of American Rabbis resolved

to “urge all peoples involved in the current struggle–be those people Muslims, Christians,

or Jews, be they citizens of Israel, citizens of those nations which share common

borders with Israel, or the stateless who are the concern of us all–to join forthrightly,

openly, and without precondition or prior threat, in the active search for a fair,

enduring, all embracing peace,” and to “join with those citizens and officials of

the State of Israel who hold that the pursuit of justice and peace by the Jewish State

must now be undertaken with renewed commitment, [it being] intolerable for the status quo

to be maintained”; and

WHEREAS since that time the Palestinian uprising has remained in the forefront of

world Jewish concerns.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that

l. the CCAR continue to condemn the violence and terror on all sides; and

2. ewe urge the United States to maintain and to enhance all forms of support for

Israel, even while encouraging the opening of new pathways to peace.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the CCAR urge the Government of Israel to negotiate with

the freely-chosen representatives of the Palestinian people toward a peace which

will provide both for the security of Israel and the legitimate needs of the Palestinians.
