Congregations, Smaller

Resolution Adopted by the CCAR

Smaller Congregations

Adopted by the CCAR at the 98th Annual Convention of

the Central Conference of American Rabbis

1987

Since a significant number of congregations that are members of the Union of American

Hebrew Congregations belong in the category of “smaller congregations” as defined

by the UAHC and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and since a very significant number of CCAR members who serve in congregational pulpits are the rabbis of these

smaller congregations, the CCAR takes a vital interest in the success of these congregations

and colleagues.

The UAHC has also developed a committee for smaller congregations, which is very active,

and has appointed our colleague, Lawrence Jackovsky, as staff person to this committee,

since it relates to UAHC activities and programs for smaller congregations.

Therefore, the chairman of the UAHC Small Congregations Committee, Jerry Tanenbaum,

has proposed to UAHC Chairman of the Board Charles Rothschild and President Alexander

Schindler the creation of a UAHC Department for Smaller Congregations.

BE IT RESOLVED that the CCAR support the call made by the Chairman of the UAHC Small

Congregations Committee for the creation of such a UAHC Department.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the CCAR work with the UAHC to create such a department

as rapidly as possible, and that the department be fully staffed with a full-time

director and a support system fully funded for maximum efficiency and effect
