Direct Vote for the District of Columbia
Adopted by the CCAR at the 90th Annual Convention of
the Central Conference of American Rabbis
Phoenix, Arizona, March 26-29, 1979
The Central Conference of American Rabbis favors an amendment to the Constitution
of the United States of America giving full representation to the citizens of the
District of Columbia in the Congress of the United States.
Citizens of the District have only recently been allowed to vote for President. They
still may not vote directly for the individuals who pass on much of the major legislation
which affects their lives. These disenfranchised citizens await the ratification of an amendment to the Constitution by the various State legislatures.
Therefore, this Conference calls upon its members to urge the legislatures of their
states to ratify this amendment.
