Resolution Adopted by the CCAR
Adult Jewish Study
Adopted by the CCAR at the 90th Annual Convention of
the Central Conference of American Rabbis
Phoenix, Arizona, March 26-29, 1979
The Jewish People has always regarded study as a mitzvah obligatory upon all Jews,
adults and children alike. Life-long study is a supreme Jewish value enjoined upon
all of us by our tradition. The National Curriculum Project of the UAHC is creating
an integrated curriculum for the Movement which will recognize explicitly the lifelong
nature of Jewish study for pre-school through adulthood. Only informed and knowledgeable
Reform Jews can make enlightened choices from within the vastness of the Jewish tradition.
The CCAR:
1. Reaffirms the concept of lifelong Jewish study as value for all Jews;
2. Calls upon all congregations affiliated with the Reform Movement to recognize that
educating Jewish adults must have the same priority as educating Jewish children;
3. Calls upon our congregations to provide adequate funding for adult Jewish courses
including resources and textbooks, qualified teachers and professional staff;
4. Affirms the need for serious, sustained and systematic Jewish study within Reform
congregations.
