Resolution Adopted by the
CCAR
Federal Funding for
Parochial Schools
Adpoted by the 103rd
Annual Convention of
the Central Conference of American
Rabbis
San Antonio, Texas, April, 1992
WHEREAS, the Central Conference of American Rabbis vigorously
affirms that quality
education is
the cornerstone of the American democratic process, and
WHEREAS, the Central Conference of American
Rabbis has perennially upheld with equal
vigor the principle of separation of church and state in the
realm of public education;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Central Conference of
American Rabbis restates
its
opposition to any form of government funding to elementary and
secondary schools
under the
supervision or control, direct or implicit, of any religious body,
denomination or sect, and
BE IT
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the CCAR especially deplores the attempt by
President
Bush to disguise direct
aid to parochial schools with a proposal for a voucher system
that would release Federal funds
for the support of parochial education.
